In this edition of Rethinking Humanity, we had the honor of hosting Pita Limjaroenrat, Prime Minister-designate of Thailand, for an in-depth conversation on leadership, democracy, and Asia’s evolving role in the world. The dialogue was structured around three interconnected dimensions: the past, the present, and the future.
The world is at a historic crossroads. Climate change, shifting geopolitical dynamics, technological disruption, and the rise of artificial intelligence are reshaping humanity’s trajectory. To navigate this transformation, we need new ways of thinking, learning from visionary leaders who have shaped societies and inspired generations.

Their experiences, insights, and hopes will guide audiences, especially the younger generation, in imagining and building a better future.

Discussion with: Mr Pita Limjaroenrat, Prime Minister-designate of Thailand
Leadership as a Constant Struggle
Pita Limjaroenrat, former Prime Minister Designate of Thailand, discussed his definition of leadership as a constant struggle to make change happen, emphasizing the importance of consistency, transparency, vision, and resilience. He highlighted that leadership requires followers and involves analyzing situations, communicating plans, and adapting to challenges. Pita also compared leadership to swimming, noting that while it can be taught, practical experience is essential. The discussion touched on Thailand's role as a mid-sized nation navigating powerful geopolitical and domestic currents, with Pita suggesting that countries like Thailand can serve as examples of resilience.
Mid-sized Nations Strategic Challenges
Pita discussed the challenges faced by mid-sized nations, emphasizing the need for a SWOT analysis to understand internal capabilities and external environments. He highlighted the importance of diversifying partnerships to reduce risks and maintain strategic autonomy. The discussion also covered global challenges such as conflicts, cyber threats, contemporary forms of slavery, corruption, and the race for critical minerals, which Pita identified as priorities for leaders in navigating current issues effectively.
Asia's Challenges and Leadership
Pita discussed the six contemporary challenges facing Asia and the world, including cyber misinformation, corruption, and climate justice, emphasizing the need for prioritization and reform. He highlighted the global debt crisis and the shift in government spending towards defense, noting the sacrifice this entails for public welfare and development. Pita also addressed ASEAN's role in addressing regional conflicts and its potential as both a battleground and stabilizer, advocating for a reformed mandate that balances sovereignty with human rights. He advised young leaders to empathize with Gen Z, study history to prevent atrocities, and develop critical thinking and constructive dialogue skills in the digital age.
Pita concluded by advocating for servant leadership, encouraging leaders to create opportunities for others to shine and to focus on collaborative teamwork.
